This kind of journalism is dangerous even if one wants to be sympathetic to the cause: @nytimes blithely gives a newspaper industry group's "study" a lot of ink with very little data "@Google Made $4.7 Billion From the News Industry in 2018, Study Says" https://t.co/PmXRapfgC8

“Google Made $4.7 Billion From the News Industry in 2018, Study Says.” But why is the @nytimes publishing this before the report is public? We have no way to assess how accurate this estimate is as there’s no methodology or transparency offered. https://t.co/xugjGm0Kwo

It appears that $4.7 billion number comes from extrapolating a $100 million Google News figure in 2008.

Which, if that's the case, makes no sense at all
The New York Times unquestioning write-up of that study claiming Google made $4.7 billion from the news industry was based on this.

That’s it. https://t.co/2d9Iskqg9m
This isn't zero-sum. How much did news organizations make from search referrals?https://t.co/BfhfeJoeOi
— Ben Mullin (@BenMullin) June 9, 2019
Utter bullshit. Snippets in search are NOT content. Jeesh. They are links TO the publishers. Google does not monetize Google News. When it makes money on news it's by serving ads ON publishers' sites. https://t.co/z1fcCXrTPZ

Oh my god is this nonsense. Marissa Mayer makes an offhanded comment in 2008 about a product that has *literally no advertising or monetization whatsoever*, and suddenly a decade later Google News accounts for 3.3% of Google’s revenue? Bullshit.https://t.co/Wtc8Nzk41T
